Australian Camp Hike

1 Day

The Australian Camp hike is one of the most rewarding day trips in Pokhara. Merely 38km away from Pokhara, the path to the camp goes through verdant forests, terraced farmlands, and quaint villages. Moreover, the viewpoint of the camp also offers panoramic views of mountains such as Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Manaslu, among others.

Australian Camp hike involves an easy walk that people of all ages can do. The day trip is only about 2 hours of a trek to the camp, which sits at an elevation of 1900 meters. Pokhara itself is at around 800 meters, so it is less than a thousand-meter of altitude gain. However, despite a sub-2000m elevation, the Australian camp is in a remarkable vantage point. As a result, it offers beautiful panoramic views of mountains and valleys. You will also witness ethnic cultures and rural lifestyles in Dhampus village while on this hike.

If you are looking for a short and rewarding day hike near Pokhara, then this hike is for you.

Itinerary

The simple one-day hike starts from Pokhara, whereby we drive for about 45 minutes to reach Kande. From Kande, we begin our hiking towards the Australian Camp. Our trail passes through forests, small settlements, and farmlands as we enjoy the easy path in a natural environment. It mainly comprises stone steps, and while it is an uphill climb, the track is not very steep.

About 1.5 hours of the walk will bring us to the camp. We will enjoy the view and have some lunch in the camp while taking in the fresh air and incredible vistas. After that, we will continue our hike, but this time, it is mostly descending downhill to reach the ethnic village of Dhampus. We climb down further and arrive at Phedi, where a private vehicle will drive us back to Pokhara.
